Hernando County Extension Office will offer a "Successful Fall and Winter Vegetable Gardening" class at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Spring Hill Branch Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive. The proper planting time and care of homegrown vegetables will be discussed. The class will be presented by Urban Horticulture Agent Jim Moll and will be free. Hernando County Utilities Department will hold a class entitled "Butterfly Gardening for Hernando County" at 10 a.m. Aug. 24 at the Spring Hill Branch Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive. The class will be presented by John Korycki of the Hernando County Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Program. The class will cover how to identify the correct host plants for a butterfly garden to attract target butterfly species. Special guest Sue Walsh will teach the program. Sons of Italy Nature Coast Lodge 2502 will hold its annual lodge picnic from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 20 at The Heather, 9100 Nakoma Way, Weeki Wachee. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at 9:30 a.m., and the main meal will be at 1 p.m. Bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard or bingo (bring a dabber) can be played. Nine holes of golf will be played at 10 a.m. at a cost of $10, and horse racing will be held at 3 p.m. with Ann Marie. Ticket cost is $8 per person for members and immediate family only. Elks Lodge 2582 will hold breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Aug. 21 at the lodge, 14494 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. A variety of breakfast food will include french toast, eggs any style, omelets, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, coffee, tea and juice. The cost will range from $4.25 to $5.75. In addition, the lodge will hold an all-you-can-eat fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 24. All-you-can-eat Alaskan Pollack dinner with salad and fries will be featured. The cost is $6 per person.
