The summer is filled with the excitement of being outside and enjoying the warm sunny days. During the summer, it is easy to remember to apply our sunscreen on a regular basis because there are a lot of reminders out there about the damage the sun can do to our skin.
We see commercials on TV advertising sunscreen, and store display shelves are stocked with various bottles. Sunscreen is advertised for everyone, young and old.
Once we approach the end of the summer, the advertising ends but the sun stays. We pass Labour Day weekend and pack away the sunscreen and pull out the school supplies. Regular routines return to normal and applying sunscreen is all too often left out of that routine.
When people are not having fun in the sun or on vacation they may forget about the harmful effects the sun can have on their skin. Sun can cause harm all year round.
In the fall, winter and spring, children continue to play outside at home and at school. The delicate skin of our children needs to be protected during all four seasons. For example, some children are not aware that they could potentially get a sunburn on their face when outside on a bright winter day building a snowman.
The rules for sun safety are pretty simple and apply throughout the year. Remember these tips whenever you are out in the sun:
Reduce your exposure to the sun during peak UV times -10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.
Wear a hat to cover your face, head, neck, and ears.
Wear UV protective sunglasses.
Have sun safety become a part of your regular routine in the winter, spring, summer and fall. Don't let the temperature of the air fool you in to thinking you are safe from the sun.
