5:30 update --- Figured I'd move the most recent news up here.
Twelvve of the 13 boats in the pits qualified today led by the Dave Villwock and the Spirit of Qatar at 151.879.
Next was Steve David and the Oh Boy! Oberto at 150.835 and Scott Liddycoat and the U-7 Valken.com at 149.950.
The only boat that did not qualify was Ken Muscatel in the U-25 Miss PROCRAFT Windows. The fuelline on his boat came off and he was unable to get a qualifying speed.
He will have another chance to qualify tomorrow morning before Heat racing begins at 3:05 p.m.
2 p.m. --- Hello from the Stan Sayres Pits (and since I'm usually a football writer, I always just hope I don't write Gale Sayers) where we are deep into the first day of Seafair.
I'm watching a plane going backwards at the moment, which is amazing, though I have no idea how or why it is doing it.
I'm here to chronicle the racing -- I grew up in the Tri-Cities and have been told I saw my first race in 1966 though the first I remember is the 1970 Atomic Cup, the one where the Bud basically blew up in the first turn and sunk to the bottom of the Columbir River. Sports Illustrated devoted a couple of pages to it a week or so later, which was pretty much the most exciting thing to happen in the Tri-Cities in the decade of the '70s other than the opening of a couple of McDonald's restrautants.
Anyway, there's been only testing here so far this morning with qualifying today running from 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
The testing this morning was relatively uneventful --- no accidents and no real speed records or anything. The boats will tune it up for the qualifying here in a little while and I'll keep you as up to date as I can with what happens.
You can also follow it on the sport's official web site.
2:45 p.m. update --- Qualifying is about to start here under overcast skies. H1 Chairman Sam Cole just visited the press area to say that everything is going fine. He probably wouldn't volunteer otherwise, but other than the lack of sun, I don't see anything amiss, so I'll take him for his word.

Both drivers blamed a slow-speed collision in Heat 3A on the starting process, as the U-9 Miss VisitTri-Cities.com ran up on the U-25 Miss Procraft Windows in the trolling period before the one-minute gun. U-9 driver Jon Zimmerman said water coming up
Bononcini, who is working with the U-57 Formulaboats Presents Todd Hoss, needs to complete 10 laps at 130 MPH or greater to be qualified. • Ken Muscatel's U-25 Miss PROCRAFT was not able to qualify, but received a commissioner's exemption to get into

"It makes a big difference," said Ken Muscatel, driver and owner of the U-25 Miss PROCRAFT, at a news conference Tuesday to kick off this year's Seafair weekend. "I don't think anybody will drive any harder, but I think they'll be a hell of a lot
