August 27--MONROE CANTON - In the context of six-foot high grass, dignitaries, such as the Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee and Senator Capri Cafaro state preached the virtues of this biofuel crops Miscanthus Friday afternoon.
The preaching was mostly to the choir, which was this small. The press conference was convened to make a final push for landowners and farmers to register for the biofuels program assistance to farmers (PCE), although the farmers who need to hear the message were more often absent.
The meeting convened in an unshaven, muddy terrain along Middle Road, where Aloterra Energy operates his farm demonstration Miscanthus. Matt Griswold, chief financial officer of energy company based in Texas, said first field demonstration will be harvested in early spring of 2012.
If Aloterra managed to plant 50,000 hectares of miscanthus in the region in 2014, an estimated 1200 new jobs will be created and $ 50 million injected into the regional economy annually, according to a study conducted by Environment International Corp. "What we're looking at here today is really a wonderful opportunity, not only for the agriculture community but also for citizens, taxpayers and businesses," said County Commissioner Joseph Moroski.
State Sen. Tim Grendell, R-Bainbridge, said Miscanthus, which is grown on marginal farmland, will be good for the region's family farms.
"This is another step in keeping these family farmers here," said Grendell, who added that family farms produce more than crops: They instill a strong work ethic in children.
Cafaro, D-Hubbard, said Ohioans need to recognize that farms can produce more than food. Several of the speakers said that Miscanthus gives Ohio the opportunity to reinvent itself and help the nation ease its dependence on foreign energy.
The preaching was, for the most part, to the choir, which was small at that. The press conference was convened to make one last push for landowners and farmers to sign up for the Biofuels Crop Assistance Program (BCAP), although the farmers who needed
