The Steinbeck Festival, the 31st annual celebration of Salinas' own Nobel Prize-winning author, gets under way today and runs through Sunday with a variety of events at various locations from the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas to Cannery Row in Monterey. The theme this year is "Friends and Foes," with a display at the Steinbeck Center featuring a French graphic artist's rendering of "Of Mice and Men."

ª Where: Most festival events are either held at the National Steinbeck Center, 1 Main St., Salinas, or depart from it.
ª Tickets: Available at 831-775-4721 or online at www.steinbeck.org . On average, they're $18 per event. A daily "passport" to all events is $60. Full festival passport price tickets are $150. That's for all events Friday through Sunday. The exception is lunches and events after 7 p.m. Sunday's activities are free to Monterey County residents and, that day, are bilingual.
