Sen. Boxer Talks Jobs & Education During Valley Visit
During her stop, Boxer said new technologies and clean energy jobs are vital to getting Americans back to work. According to figures released last week, unemployment rates increased in four Valley counties during the month of July. Merced County currently has the third highest unemployment rate in the state.
"Unless the Republicans decide that job creation is more important than defeating the Democrats, it's gonna be a long time until we have jobs," said Boxer.
But R epublicans blame Democrats for the slow job growth. As President Barack Obama gears up for what's expected to be a tough re-election fight, those hoping to face him next fall are taking aim at his record.
"Since June of 2009 to the present, 40% of all the new jobs created in America have been in Texas. I want to take that success to this country," said Texas Governor Rick Perry during a campaign stop last week.
Sophomore Denisha Lincoln, who attends U.C. Merced, says she hopes Congress can reach a job deal soon. She's been looking for work for months.
"I applied honestly this summer to like 12 jobs, and I only got 2 callbacks," said Lincoln.
