Lemonade, iced tea and homemade baked goods have become a powerful fundraising tool in the hands of some Rosemount daycare kids.
For the past five years, the kids at Crystal’s Cuddle Bugs have turned a streetside stand into a tool to help the food shelf at the Rosemount Family Resource Center. For two days each August, the kids make the lemonade, set up the stand and do business along the side of the street. They sell to neighbors and to anyone else who happens by.
The whole thing started with a request for a little summer project. The kids saw an opportunity to have some fun, but daycare owner Crystal Swanson saw a teaching opportunity. She asked the kids what they planned to do with the money they made, and while their first reaction was to buy toys, they eventually settled on charity. Their final choices came down to the food shelf and the Minnesota Zoo.
Swanson gets the kids involved in all aspects of the process. She walks them through planning their purchases, and she takes them to the store so they can help buy their supplies. She tries to teach them a little bit about finances.
Parents contributed sweet treats like cookies or Fruity Pebble bars — the Flintstone-themed equivalent of Rice Krispie treats.
As the sale dates approach, Swanson spreads the word.
“I used to send out a big email,” she said. “Now I advertise on Facebook.”
The sale takes place over two days, because Swanson has different groups of kids at her daycare each day and she wants to get as many as possible involved.
“A lot of them really like it,” Swanson said.
“The first day was awesome. We got like $75,” said Logan Swanson.
By the time the sale was done, the kids had collected about $125 and two boxes of food. By the end of the day Friday, kids were snacking on leftover baked goods and enjoying their successful sale.
“It just felt good to help the food shelf, knowing people are starving,” Logan Swanson said.
